Ventral Hernia repair

Ventral Hernia repair

As in the picture, multiple types of ventral hernias exist. A hernia can only be treated with surgical repair. These days, the use of mesh to repair hernias is almost the standard, as mesh repair has a lower recurrence rate.

Many are performed by the conventional open method. Some are performed laparoscopically . Laparoscopic hernia repair is a technique to fix tears or openings in the abdominal wall using small incisions, (small telescopes inserted into the abdomen) and a patch (screen or mesh) to reinforce the abdominal wall. It may offer a quicker return to work and normal activities with decreased pain for some patients.

Laparoscopic repair for incisional hernias without redundant skin has a major advantage to open repair. Worldwide, it is almost becoming the standard of care.
