Endoscopic endobarrier is a non-surgical endoscopic solution for bypassing the Duodenum and early Jejunum. A protective barrier is passed endoscopically from the lower stomach valve (pylorus) to the early Jejunum. This prevents food contact with the inner aspect of the Duodenum (Duodenal mucosa), thus working as if it is a complete bypass of that portion. This improved type II Diabetes control in initial european studies up to 12-week follow up. Now it is being utilized up to one year. It experienced a hiccup , as some patients experienced liver abscesses after its insertion. Now it is undergoing changes and further studies to ensure safety.
It is a very promising technology made by the company GI dynamics. It will continue to evolve to minimize any problem with device migration. Again, long term studies are needed to compare it to intensive medical treatment, and to report the metabolic changes after its removal.
