Adhesions are scars that form within the body. They usually form in the abdomen or pelvis. Adhesions develop naturally after surgery as part of the healing process, especially after traditional open surgery. They can also develop after infection or any other inflammatory process, such as:
- Endometriosis
- Diverticulitis
- Appendicitis
Lysis of adhesions is the process of cutting scar tissue within the body. This is done to restore normal anatomy, function and reduce pain. It is best done laparoscopically, as laparoscopy decreases the incidence of adhesions. Other special solutions or sheets can be used to minimize adhesion recurrence as well.
Even after multiple previous open procedures, Laparoscopy may be feasible. GBMC experience is great in these situations.
