Surgery is not for everyone. It is for those who fulfill the criteria for surgery. If not accompanied with lifestyle changes the results are usually suboptimal with high chances to regain weight later in life.
There are many options with varying degree of gut hormonal changes along with changes gut microbiota, with many others known and unknown. In the past, we thought of the procedures as: restrictive, malabsorptive or mixed. But now we know more, as these procedures affect the entire environment and homeostasis of the GI tract, thus affecting the disease obesity in various ways and to varying degrees.
