Since the pancreas carries many cells of different origins and functions, multiple types of tumors can arise from these different types of cells. Tumors of the pancreas can be functional (endocrine or exocrine: most commonly Insulinoma and Gastrinoma) or non-functional. They can be solid (most commonly ductal adenocarcinoma) or cystic (like Mucinous Cystadenoma or MCN in middle aged females or Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm or IPMN in older males).
The general prognosis (outcome) of these tumors depends on their type. The most common is pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma which carries overall a poor prognosis if presented late. Functional tumors have different outcomes also depending on the type of the tumor. Insulinomas generally have better prognosis compared to gastrinomas.
Surgery is almost a must in tumors of the pancreas. It can be done through minimally invasive laparoscopic technique which is Dr. Ahmad Bashir special interest. These procedures need great knowledge of the anatomical variations that can occur in the surrounding important vessels. GBMC & Jordan Hospital has the experience to back up the good surgical outcomes they had.
Intra-operative sophisticated anesthesia measures, post-operative critical care, great expertise in the most advanced radiological interventions, and excellent nursing care are very important parts of these procedures. These are all present at Jordan Hospital. The great support system present of the hospital facilitates the journey of patients and their families through these difficult procedures.
