Tumors of the small bowel are rare. They can be benign or malignant. Any tumor can cause bowel obstruction through complete luminal obliteration or through telescoping of the bowel something called “Intussusception”. Malignant tumors of the small bowel tend to have very poor prognosis. They can be managed through minimally invasive techniques.
Large bowel or colon tumors are the commonest cause of colonic surgery in Jordan and a lot of countries in the Middle East. Malignant tumors or cancers take are the leading type to require surgery. After the medical literature settled the long time debate between laparoscopic and open surgery for cancer in the early 2000s, laparoscopic surgery has definitely taken over open surgery for treatment of colon and rectal cancer. All colonic surgery can be approached laparoscopically even low rectal tumors. At GBMC, all of these procedures can be carried out with great success, and the same, if not superior, dissection of the lymphatics compared to open surgery is also carried out. All precautionary measures of dealing with colonic tumors laparoscopically are taken.
Even prior colostomies for diversion, after an open procedure can be reversed laparoscopically. At GBMC and Jordan Hospital, we promise to deliver the best and most superior care to benefit the patients, lessen their suffering, and shorten their stay.
